On December 10th, at Hawkeye Community College, the 4-H Staff and Fair Board weighed in and tagged 23 Market Beef Animals for the Black Hawk County 4-H and FFA Fair in July. With one livestock weigh-in under our belt for the 2017 Exhibition year, we feel that it is important to share protocol and important dates for livestock exhibitors!
Swine does not have a weigh in event for biosecurity reasons; as done in previous years, families will need to pick up tags, forms, and taggers at the Extension Office and tag and weigh their own animals by April 8th. Exhibitor sheets and photos of the animal with the tag/weight will need returned to the Extension office in April.
Sheep and Meat Goat Weigh in will be May 6th from 8:00-10:00 AM at Hawkeye Community College. All sheep and goats (Exotic, Dairy, Meat, Breeding) must have a county 4-H tag (green) and must submit an exhibitor form to verify animals in 4-H Online.
ALL LIVESTOCK must be verified in 4-H Online by MAY 15th. This is a STATE DEADLINE. This due date is absolutely vital, write it on your calendars and circle it twice!
Beginning June 15th, 4-H members can sign their verified animals up for classes at fair in Fair Entry. Fair Entry will close for both Livestock and Static Entries on July 13th.
Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) Training, formally known as Food Safety Quality Assurance (FSQA) Training, is mandatory of 4-H members planning to raise and exhibit Beef, Sheep, Dairy, Dairy Goat, Meat Goat, Swine, Poultry, or Rabbits.
Space is limited for training at each meeting date, please RSVP at least two days before your desired date to the Black Hawk County Extension and Outreach Office. Trainings are held at Hawkeye Community College’s Farm and dates are as follows: March 27th (6:30-8:00 PM), April 8th (9:00-10:30 AM), April 17th (6:30-8:00 PM), and April 22nd (9:00-10:30 AM).
NEW: 4-H Members must attend at least 4 regular club meetings to exhibit at the 2017 Black Hawk County 4-H and FFA Fair.
